Epitalon
A four amino acid peptide studied in Russian research on telomerase and ageing.
What it is
Epitalon is a synthetic version of a pineal gland peptide, developed and studied largely in Russia from the 1980s onward.
How it works
Published work reports activation of telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the protective caps on chromosomes, along with effects on melatonin rhythm.
What it is researched for
- Sleep and circadian rhythm
- Telomere length in cell studies
- General ageing markers
Research status
Most data comes from a small number of Russian research groups. Independent replication is thin.
What to watch for
- Limited independent evidence
- Theoretical concerns about telomerase activation and cell growth
- Vivid dreams and sleep shifts reported by users
Storage
Lyophilised powder keeps in the freezer or fridge, away from light. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, keep it refrigerated and use it within about four weeks.
Common questions
Why the short courses?
Published protocols use pulsed 10 to 20 day courses rather than continuous dosing.
Does it actually extend life?
Rodent studies suggest effects on lifespan markers. There is no human evidence for that claim.
