Melanotan II
A tanning peptide with well documented side effects and mole concerns.
What it is
Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of alpha-MSH, the hormone that triggers pigment production in skin.
How it works
It activates melanocortin receptors, increasing melanin production. It also hits the receptor linked to sexual arousal and appetite, which is why those effects appear alongside the tan.
What it is researched for
- Skin pigmentation
- Sun sensitivity conditions
- Libido as a side effect
Research status
Not approved anywhere. Regulators in several countries have issued warnings.
What to watch for
- New or darkening moles, which need dermatology review
- Nausea and facial flushing, especially early
- Spontaneous erections in men
- Reports of melanoma have prompted formal safety warnings
Storage
Lyophilised powder keeps in the freezer or fridge, away from light. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, keep it refrigerated and use it within about four weeks.
Common questions
Does it protect against sunburn?
It darkens skin but does not replace sun protection, and it has been linked to mole changes.
How is it different from PT-141?
PT-141 was developed from it for sexual function, with the pigmentation effect reduced.
