PT-141

A melanocortin agonist that works on desire in the brain rather than blood flow.

What it is

PT-141 is a derivative of melanotan II, developed specifically for sexual function rather than tanning.

How it works

It activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system, which influences sexual desire directly. This is a different route from the blood flow drugs.

What it is researched for

  • Low sexual desire in premenopausal women
  • Erectile function in men

Research status

FDA approved as Vyleesi for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women.

What to watch for

  • Nausea, which is the most common side effect by a wide margin
  • Flushing and headache
  • Temporary blood pressure rise, so caution with existing hypertension
  • Skin darkening with repeated use

Storage

Lyophilised powder keeps in the freezer or fridge, away from light. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, keep it refrigerated and use it within about four weeks.

Common questions

How is it different from Viagra?

Viagra works on blood flow. PT-141 works on desire signalling in the brain. They are not interchangeable.

Can it be taken daily?

Protocols use it occasionally, not daily. Frequent use raises the nausea and pigmentation issues.
